There's a stretch of southern West Virginia where your phone turns into a shiny calculator and the map becomes a polite suggestion. Coal didn't just employ people there. It paid for the normal everyone else assumes is guaranteed. When it left, it didn't leave a gap. It left a vacuum, and vacuums get filled.
The person who was introduced to that pill doesn't experience it as a headline. They experience it as the first quiet moment they've had in years. When the prescriptions got pulled back, the need didn't disappear. It migrated. Fentanyl showed up cheap, potent and unforgiving: a chemical roulette wheel dressed up as something familiar.
These towns aren't disposable, and they aren't content. They're full of talent, humor, pride, and people still trying. Neglect creates the conditions. Profit exploits them. The way out is building something stable enough that relief doesn't have to come in a bag, a pill or a lie.

Roulette
Lead single · Out nowThe house never wagers. The wager is you.
The supply chain of a counterfeit pill, from the boardroom that turned pain into a number to the basement press, and the family at the end who bought what looked like medicine.
Lyricsfor Roulette
Ask your doctor Relief may be closer than you think Rep at the office with lunch in a case Data in a deck and concern on his face Pain got numbered, the number got charted Chart became a metric, the metric got marketed Fifth vital sign, underline the phrase Undertreated suffering, prescribe for more days Every clean signature moved through a funnel From exam-room mercy to a quarterly number Quota wore a necktie, bonus had a region Every objection had a study and a reason Dependency sat buried in the finer print While the sales map lit up where the factories went dim Then the bodies made noise that the board could not mute Depositions, documents, a courtroom full of proof Settlement signed, public statement composed As though hunger reads the paperwork and knows when to close Roulette, roulette, pressed to look true One lets you wake up, one never lets you Same little logo, no way to choose The house never wagers The wager is you Roulette, roulette, same shade of blue One gets you through it, one buries you No label, no batch, no warning comes through The house never wagers The wager is you They cut the scripts, not the circuitry Pulled back supply, left the urgency Built the appetite, then closed the kitchen Called it prevention when the route went missing Demand does not vanish, it changes address Finds a cheaper chemist and a faster process Fentanyl entered as market correction Potent by the grain with efficient distribution No crop in a field, no season, no rain Small enough to ship, strong enough to replace Every slower product that had cost more to move Economics with a body count attached to the proof Officials said progress, fewer pills in the county Meanwhile every bag became chemical accounting A fraction too heavy, an uneven blend One person wakes up, one person does not again Roulette, roulette, pressed to look true One lets you wake up, one never lets you Same little logo, no way to choose The house never wagers The wager is you Roulette, roulette, same shade of blue One gets you through it, one buries you No label, no batch, no warning comes through The house never wagers The wager is you She hurt her back lifting boxes at work Prescription ran out, but the pain never heard Friend knew a friend with the same little thirty Score down the center, edges looked sturdy He was not chasing death, he was chasing a shift Trying to stand eight hours without feeling it rip She was not in an alley, he was not in a den They were buying what looked like the medicine again Basement press put a number on the face Could not measure the powder distributed through the shape Same color, same imprint, same familiar size But appearance is useless when chemistry lies That is the cruelty hidden in the copy It resembles the thing that once entered through a pharmacy One counterfeit Tuesday, one ordinary room One family learning what a milligram can do They taught the body what relief could mean Then criminalized where the body went to find it They poisoned the replacement Then blamed the dead for buying it Roulette, roulette, pressed to look true One lets you wake up, one never lets you Same little logo, no way to choose The house never wagers The wager is you Roulette, roulette, the supply line moved The settlement cleared, the bloodstream did not No label, no batch, no warning gets through The house never wagers The wager is you Relief may be closer than you think So is the funeral

Break Glass
It was never caging whiskey, it was caging me.
A bottle kept behind glass on the mantle: the exit he never takes, and the reason he can sleep.
Lyricsfor Break Glass
In case of emergency... Glass case on the mantle like a fire alarm Bottle sitting pretty, I ain't buying the charm I know what's in that amber: every siren, every scar Every bridge I ever torched with the light in my palm I don't pour it, I patrol it, call it ritual Little glass museum for the old original Hundred proof of who I was, living proof of what I quit Frame around the danger keeps the danger where it fits I still know the route, never lost the map Every road up out my body got a road that doubles back I don't touch it, I just dust it, let it catch the light In case of emergency, break glass Knowing there's a door is how I sleep at night In case of emergency, break glass I could trade this quiet morning for a beautiful collapse Old flames, old poison, old laughs I keep the hammer hanging like a photograph In case of emergency, break glass Old ghosts got my number and they never call twice They just sit inside the silence like a set of loaded dice One roll and I'm rolling, gone a week of my life Wake up in the wreckage feeling terribly alive That's the hook in it, the crook in it, the itch in the wire Most awake I ever felt was on a tightrope over fire So I keep a little hell handy, saint with a vice Close enough to remember, locked enough to think twice Took me years behind that glass to finally see It was never caging whiskey, it was caging me Crown I don't wear, throne I won't sit The day I quit guarding it, I go back to being it Some days I palm the hammer just to feel it in my grasp In case of emergency, break glass Then I set it down slow and let the moment pass In case of emergency, break glass Every morning I don't swing it is a morning that I keep Old flames, old poison, old sleep It ain't the drink I'm scared of, it's how fast I go back So in case of emergency... break glass Break glass.

Put Down What I Think I Know
Maybe I’ve been holding on to what’s been holding me.
A confession about the defenses that kept him sick, and the one question that finally got through.
Lyricsfor Put Down What I Think I Know
Maybe I don't need another answer. Maybe I need less of mine. I had a reason for the wreckage, a defense for every dent, Every bridge I ever burned came with evidence attached. I could litigate the history, articulate the misery, Turn a selfish little decision to a symptom of the past. Had a villain for the anger, had a childhood for the damage, Had a name for every habit 'cept the one that had my name. I was brilliant at explaining why the bottle wasn't drinking me, Why the thing that kept on killing me was somehow not to blame. See, the sickness never kicked the door, it memorized the keycode, Learned my voice and wore it home, so every lie sounded reasonable. "I deserve it." "I can stop." "It's been rough." "Nobody needs to know." Tiny sentences that turn a grown man's world to something unrecognizable. And I hated everybody who could see it before I did, 'Cause the truth feels like betrayal when denial pays the rent. I could point at every person who had ever left a fingerprint On the glass around my life and never notice mine was pressed against it. I thought knowing why I hurt meant I knew how to heal. Thought admitting I was drowning meant the water wasn't real. Had a master's in avoidance, minor study in control, Could describe the whole damn prison, couldn't figure out the door. So take the things I've sworn were true, The stories I defend. Put 'em somewhere out of reach And let me look again. Put down what I think I know, Just long enough to see. Maybe I've been holding on To what's been holding me. If I walk in with the answers, I'll leave the way I came. So empty out the room a little, Let me learn another name For mercy, For freedom, For waking up and staying. Put down what I think I know. Maybe there's another way. I used to think that getting clean meant getting even with the past, Like sobriety was evidence that everybody else was wrong. Kept a catalog of casualties, apologies, catastrophes, Then carried every grievance like it proved that I belonged. I could weaponize a memory, romanticize an enemy, Rehearse a conversation from a decade back verbatim. Kept resentment in a glass case, polished every bad day, Then wondered why the poison tasted stronger when I drank it. That's the trick of it. It doesn't always tell you, "Go destroy your life tonight." Sometimes it says, "You're right." Sometimes it sounds like pride. Sometimes it sits quiet while you isolate for five days, Then hands you your conclusions like you reached 'em with a wise mind. That's terrifying. 'Cause I was waiting for a monster I could recognize on sight, Not a thought that sounded exactly like the thoughts I thought were mine. Not the need to be correct. Not the fear of being known. Not confusing independence with just dying on my own. So I started asking different things. Not, "How do I make this stop?" More like, "What if what I learned before is all I've ever got?" "What if everything I'm certain of is blocking something better?" "What if dropping my defenses doesn't mean that I surrender To a person, Or a doctrine, Or somebody else's truth? What if all I'm really dropping Is the lie I can't improve?" Take the things I've sworn were true, The stories I defend. I don't need the past erased. I don't need the pain explained. I don't need to call it justice Every time I stay the same. I don't need to win the argument I have inside my head. Maybe peace begins the minute I stop needing to be right instead. Now I wake up with the same brain, same name, same history, Same capacity for making self-deception sound like dignity. Difference is I don't automatically believe the first edition Of the story that my fear submits the second that something's hitting me. I can question my conclusions. I can leave a little space. I can feel an accusation without building out a case. I can catch myself preparing some imaginary closing statement And remember half my suffering came from needing vindication. That's progress. Not a movie-scene redemption where the credits roll clean, More like noticing the exits when I would've made a scene. Making one less call I shouldn't. Taking one more honest breath. Learning "not today" can sometimes be the distance between life and death.

The First Quiet
It wasn’t a high, it was the first quiet.
Why relief is remembered even after it turns. It wasn't a high. It was the first quiet in years.
Lyricsfor The First Quiet
I used to think it looked like weakness Something people should outrun Till I understood the silence Could feel like mercy to someone When your body won't stop aching When your mind won't let you rest When every day comes in too loud Anything softer feels like breath It wasn't glory It wasn't light It was just one minute Without the fight It wasn't a high, it was the first quiet The first time the noise went dim The first time the weight got lighter The first time the hush moved in And once your blood learns that kind of mercy It don't forget where it's been It wasn't a high, it was the first quiet And then they went lookin' again No headline ever tells it honest No courtroom says it like the skin How relief can move in gentle Then teach the body to give in You can call it what you want to You can dress it up in blame But if peace shows up inside a pill You'll remember that peace by name It wasn't freedom It wasn't right It was just one moment Without the fight It wasn't a high, it was the first quiet The first time the noise went dim The first time the weight got lighter The first time the hush moved in And once your blood learns that kind of mercy It don't forget where it's been It wasn't a high, it was the first quiet And then they went lookin' again I know now Why it lingers Why it follows Why it stays When relief is all you've wanted You don't measure cost the same It wasn't a high, it was the first quiet The first time the hurt let go The first time the mind went still enough To not feel like a loaded gun And once your soul meets that kind of silence It'll chase what it can't hold then It wasn't a high, it was the first quiet And then they went lookin' again

I'm Sorry I'm Broken
I don’t need you to save me. I just need you to stay.
An apology to the person who stayed, and the ask to keep staying.
Lyricsfor I'm Sorry I'm Broken
I folded under pressure Then called it being strong Got good at looking normal While everything went wrong I watched your name light up And let it disappear You stood there in the doorway I looked through you from here I know I shut you out When I needed you the most Turn every open door Into somewhere I can't go I'm sorry I'm broken Please don't walk away I know loving me lately Has asked too much some days I don't need you to save me I just need you to stay I'm sorry I'm broken But I'm trying not to break There's a version of me That learned to disappear Laugh before they ask you What the hell you're doing here So when you reach to hold me Sometimes I still pull back Like love is just another thing I'm waiting to collapse I know I shut you out Then wonder where you went Make you pay for every hurt That you never even meant I'm sorry I'm broken Please don't walk away I know loving me lately Has asked too much some days I don't need you to save me I just need you to stay I'm sorry I'm broken But I'm trying not to break You don't have to fix me There's no right thing to say Just sit here in the quiet When I can't explain Put your hand beside mine You don't have to understand Sometimes being here is more Than anybody can And if I go somewhere You can't follow in my head Keep talking till I find you Keep me tethered to the bed I'm sorry I'm broken But I'm learning how to stay How to let you love me Without pushing you away You don't have to save me You don't have to know the way I'm sorry I'm broken But I'm here with you today I'm sorry I'm broken And I know that isn't fair But if there's still a place for me I'm trying to meet you there I'm trying to meet you there I'm trying to stay

Save Your Prayers
If you’ve got a little faith, save a little piece for me.
Back in his body, a little more light, still asking everybody for a little faith.
Lyricsfor Save Your Prayers
Story of a boy who thought he couldn't do wrong Till he did, then he vanished for a little too long Head down, half gone, trying to find home First time in my life I had to carry it alone I was scared, I was sorry, I was lost in the dark I was broke, I was lonely, I was split at the heart Now I'm back in my body with a little more light Still asking everybody tonight Pray for me Won't you pray for me? If you've got a little faith Save a little piece for me I know this road is long And these nights get cold But I can't stop now I'm too close to letting go Don't be scared Don't you cry Hold on through the fire This fight ain't over yet Save your prayers for me tonight Save your prayers for me tonight Story of a boy who thought he couldn't do right And the first time he reached out, he missed by a mile Bruised up, worn down, fighting wars in my head Trying to be your armor when I needed help instead I was tired, I was trembling, I was lost in the noise Chasing ghosts, chasing peace, trying to make the right choice Now I'm back in my body with a little more time Still asking everybody tonight Pray for me Won't you pray for me? If you've got a little faith Save a little piece for me I know this road is long And these nights get cold But I can't stop now I'm too close to letting go Don't be scared Don't you cry Hold on through the fire This fight ain't over yet Save your prayers for me tonight Save your prayers for me tonight I don't need a halo I don't need a crown Just a little mercy When the walls come down If I fall, I rise If I break, I bend I'm still here breathing This is not the end I know this road is long And these nights get cold But I can't stop now I'm too close to letting go Don't be scared Don't you cry Hold on through the fire This fight ain't over yet Save your prayers for me tonight Yeah, save your prayers for me tonight Save your prayers for me tonight

Where the Signal Dies
Some places don’t break all at once. They just get used to less.
A drive past the last bar of service into a town that got used to less, where one clinic light is still on.
Lyricsfor Where the Signal Dies
I drove far enough my phone gave up Screen went dark, map lost its touch Line on the road, black in the rain Curves through a town without a name Storefront glass and a faded sign Schoolhouse holdin' a thinner line And I could feel what never got said In every roof that leaned overhead Some places don't break all at once They just get used to less Somewhere past where the signal dies You start to see with different eyes What got missed and what survived What still burns when the wires go quiet No, the hills don't hide a thing They just hold the truth at night Somewhere past where the signal dies You start to see with different eyes Clinic light in the edge of town One more door still not shut down Parking lot half full that late Like hope and hurt arrived in shifts Coal once carried more than pay It held the bones of everyday And when it left, it left behind A kind of hole you feel in time Some places don't fall overnight They fade in plain sight Somewhere past where the signal dies You start to see with different eyes What got missed and what survived What still burns when the wires go quiet No, the hills don't hide a thing They just hold the truth at night Somewhere past where the signal dies You start to see with different eyes And I'm just drivin' through But it stays with me How a place can still stand up On what little it keeps Somewhere past where the signal dies You start to see with different eyes Not a headline, not a ghost Just people holdin' what they can And the dark don't get the final word When one light's still alive Somewhere past where the signal dies You start to see with different eyes
